NATURAL DISASTER KIT

Natural disasters happen all over the world and we all need to prepare for the events that happen in our areas. There are several types of natural disasters. Below is a list of types of different disasters that can happen.  


- Earthquake 

- Volcano Eruptions 

- Floods 

- Hurricanes 

- Severe Storms 

- Tsunamis 


Having a disaster plan can help you be organized during an uncertain time.  At the very least you want to have a “Go Bag” in case you have to leave quickly. Once your kits are made do not take items out of it, because if they are not replaced or put back you will not have what you might need. Here are some items and actions you will want to either have in your kits or do to help with events that can happen.  


HURRICANES / SEVERE STORMS  


Before   


- Listen to NOAA Weather Radio for critical information from the National Weather - Service If your area is told to evacuate, evacuate 

- Check your disaster supplies and replace or restock as needed 

- Fill your car's gas tank 

- Turn the refrigerator and freezer in the coldest setting and keep them closed as much as possible so food will last longer if the power goes out 

- Bring any outdoor furniture inside 

- Close your windows, doors and hurricane shutters 

- Board up all windows and doors with plywood 

- Learn about your community's hurricane response plan. 


During  


- Water: At least a 3-day supply; one gallon per person per day 

- Food: At least a 3-day supply of non-perishable, easy-to-prepare food 

- Flashlight Battery-powered or hand-crank radio (NOAA Weather Radio, if possible) 

- Extra batteries 

- First aid kit Medications (7-day supply) and medical items (hearing aids with extra batteries, glasses, contact lenses, syringes, cane) 

- Multi-purpose tool 

- Copies of personal documents (insurance policies, birth certificates, lease or deed to home) 

- Sanitation and personal hygiene items 

- Emergency blanket  

- Insect repellent and sunscreens 

- Baby supplies (bottles, formula, baby food, diapers) 

- Rain gear 


TORNADOS / EARTHQUAKE  


- Chemlights 

- Crank-powered NOAA emergency radio 

- Phone charger and power cell/solar charger 

- Helmet and goggles, if desired 

- Complete set of sturdy clothes, gloves, and footwear 

- Food and rations for a few days 

- Water and personal water filter 

- First-Aid Kit with trauma supplies 

- Dust Masks 

- Flashlights, headlamps, and spare batteries
